Welcome To Our Website.

Overview - A mechanical metronome is a spring and cog driven timing device aimed at providing a musical tempo or audible aid for musicians. Antique Maelzel metronomes as shown on this website, all feature mechanical movements based on variations of the original metronome mechanism patented in 1815. Units will come either with or without the addition of a bell, this bell operates generally at four settings of a ring at either 2,3,4 or 6 swings of the pendulum. The speed of the tempo of a mechanical metronome is altered by sliding the pendulum weight up ( slower ) or down ( faster ). We do not guarantee our metronomes fitted with bells to operate correctly on all four settings due to the design of the mechanism.
Please read our descriptions carefully when choosing a metronome. From experience with servicing and working with antique metronomes, it is a rarity to find a fully working and accurate unit that could be used as a reliable time-keeping aid, that is over 50 years old. Each metronome shown is also timed at 60 Beats Per Minute and serviced to ensure that it operates within +/- 10%. The actual BPM is listed in the items description. Overall operating time is also listed from fully wound, this varies depending on the units age and strength or weakness of the spring. Please note: Our Antique Metronomes should NOT be considered for musicians to use as a working reliable time keeping device, due to the nature of the brass mechanisms and wear and tear over the years, the pulse can prove to be non-reliable. Our units are offered for sale as attractive collectable shelf or display items and not as reliable time keeping devices.
